Parklife Perth 2008

Parklife Perth

For the first time in 2008, an extra stage has been introduced to highlight nothing but the finest of Perth’s dance and electronic acts. As the crowds come and the temperature rises, so does the excitement for this stage devoted entirely to the best from the West. They’ll be delivering their goods to a massive audience and right up there alongside some of the world’s best.

Proudly paying tribute to our local scene, LIVE & LOCAL will take it one step further, one bleep longer and one hand-in-the-air higher.

Read on for more info on all local artists playing at Parklife Perth.

Future Frog

Future FrogFuture Frog aka Josh – one-quarter of Electric Limosine and one-half of Bourgeois Bogan DJs – kicked off his illustrious DJ career after being booked to play at a party. After experimenting with all sorts of equipment, and sometimes vinyl, he produced a sound which jammed together a mish mash of different genres live, creating quite a stir in the local underground. Since those heady days Future Frog has honed his DJ skills to an art form, and is now regularly seen slamming down 4 or 5 tracks at once. From Electro to Punk to Italio Disco to House to R’nB, whilst busting out effects and generally going a little bit crazy in the DJ booth.

Triple J Unearthed Winners - Voltaire Twins

Voltaire Twins

The Voltaire Twins have only been around for a matter months, but they’ve already set tongues wagging, both in Perth and on the east coast.

The dynamic brother-sister combination delivers sharp electro hooks with dance floor splitting energy. Their music combines growling synth bass lines and highly danceable beats with boy-girl dueling vocals. Fun, catchy and unstoppably dancey, the Voltaire Twins are double your pleasure and twice as nice.

Shazam

ShazamStarting out making tracks on a Casio at age 10, acquiring a Moog from his highschool science room and then getting his name on 12”s in the US as a remixer at age 16, Shazam has now arrived at destroying clubs everywhere as both producer and DJ.

Known for always bringing something fresh to the table, Shazam is a producer making tracks for dancefloors rather than blogs or magazine launches. A very welcome change from the flood of Daft Banger that has overrun charts, clubs and car radios at traffic lights in recent history, he knows how to inject the right amount of bump into a track, not getting caught up in the all too prominent contest of who can bang the hardest and chop the most crooked.

Local Perth artists at Parklife 2008

Ben MacBen Mac

In 1998, Ben Mac made a smart move to Perth and his career as a DJ took shape. At that time, Perth’s underground dance music scene was starting to thrive as band sets at bars were replaced with DJ sets. By 2001, Ben Mac had regular bookings at many of Perth’s leading dance clubs – he also nabbed his first few sets at Ambar. Here, he discovered breakbeat and neither Ben, nor Ambar, have looked back.

So, what’s his style? Always keeping it fresh and never restricting himself to one style, his sets flow in and out of hip hop, mid-tempo breakbeat, house, proper party breakbeat and good old tech/tribal house. A resident at Ambar since 2001, you can catch Ben Mac rocking it out ‘til the wee hours of the morning at regular club nights Japan 4, Habitat and part of the Break-A-Holics (BAA) crew. 2007 was an award winning year for Ben Mac, seeing him voted Number 1 House DJ in the Perth Dance Music Awards 2007, as well as coming in at #6 in WA in the INTHEMIX Top 50 DJ Poll. 2008 saw Ben Mac nab #10 in the ITM TOP 10 DJs in WA.

Petrosex

Petrosex bangs beats tastier than Baba ganoush! Notorious under the guises of Bourgeois Bogan DJ's (with Future Frog) and the now defunct Mystery Flight DJ's Petrosex has wowed the crowds and amazed the masses. Petrosex had his first radio rotation on JJJ with his remix of Mel Robinson's song "RAIN" (early 2005), and has since been working on more Remix and production work, whilst managing and running the burgeoning Bourgeois Bogan promotional company.

The Transients

The TransientsWithin a very short time The Transients have begun to turn heads, starting with being a featured artist on MySpace and winning the WAMi Song of the year late 2007, to hitting #1 on the Triple J Unearthed charts. They’ve caused quite a buzz on the Australian dance scene and have been described as Underworld meets the Presets. With the release of their debut EP by the end of the year, the Transients are most definitely THE band to watch.

The Typhoons

The TyphoonsPerth-based Soul-Hop behemoth, The Typhoons have come from humble beginnings founded in years of writing and recording music and gigging, they’re a tight knit group of classically and jazz trained musicians. Adopting the ‘do-it-yourself’ ethos and possessing a nose- to- the- grindstone work ethic, this ensemble are setting their sights on bigger things. Voted ‘Best Live Act’ in the Perth Dance Music Awards 2007, they’ve wowed crowds all over town, their performance warming up for Lyrics Born last month creating quite a stir. Be sure to catch these guys in action!
