Boomtick DJ's

As Perth’s premier breakbeat DJ, Micah likes to let the music do the talking. His endless amount of energy behind the decks is renowned within the Perth dance music community, and is beginning to boom worldwide.
Micah’s myriad of awards, including Best Breaks DJ in the Perth Dance Music Awards (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 (by a huge 47% of the overall votes) and again in 2008, ranking #2 in WA and #24 nationwide in the I INTHEMIX Top 50 DJ Poll 2006 and coming in at #1 in WA, having moved up to #22 nationwide in the INTHEMIX Top 50 DJ Poll 2007, winner of the 2004 Heineken DJ competition in WA illustrate exactly why he is Perth’s favourite dance floor king.

There’s no doubt he’s worked hard to establish his top spot; Micah was the driving force behind the ‘In the Pines’ dance parties from 1997 to 2000, which attracted more than 2000 punters, developing into such a phenomenon authorities decided people were having too much fun and shut it down. Micah then moved into clubland becoming part of the ‘awarehouse’ crew, before organising and playing at the popular ‘autophon’ nights for two years at Ambar – kicking off his long-running relationship with the club.

Micah can be seen most weekends at Ambar as part of Japan 4 and the Break-A-Holics Anonymous (BAA) crew, as well as a staple in the line-up at most Boomtick events.

In 1998, Ben made a smart move to Perth and his career as a DJ took shape. At that time, Perth’s underground dance music scene was starting to thrive as band sets at bars were replaced with DJ sets. By 2001, Ben had regular bookings at many of Perth’s leading dance clubs – he also nabbed his first few sets at Ambar. Here, he discovered breakbeat and neither Ben, nor Ambar, have looked back.

So, what’s his style? Always keeping it fresh and never restricting himself to one style, his sets flow in and out of hip hop, mid-tempo breakbeat, house, proper party breakbeat and good old tech/tribal house. A resident at Ambar since 2001, you can catch Ben rocking it out ‘til the wee hours of the morning at regular club nights Japan 4, Habitat and part of the Break-A-Holics (BAA) crew.
2007 was an award winning year for Ben Mac, seeing him voted Number 1 House DJ in the Perth Dance Music Awards 2007 and 2008, as well as coming in at #6 in WA in the INTHEMIX Top 50 DJ Poll for 2007.

Tone began his DJ career in the small trance clubs of Singapore in 1997, progressing upon returning to Perth to a residency at the Spirit Soundbar and many guest appearances at the fledgling ‘backbeat’ breaks night, as well as Geisha Bar, the Mustang Bar, o2 (now Rise) and the Babylon Hotel (now the Balmoral). He was then picked from a group of Perth DJs to play the millennium New Year’s Eve on mainland China, one of the first groups of western DJs to do so. Refining the breaks/house sound, he was picked up as a resident for the Cottesloe Beach Hotel VIP room, as well as Ambar which opened in 2000. After playing the opening night, Tone still plays there to this day.

Another prominent figure in the Japan 4 crew at Ambar, Wish has been an Ambar resident for the last 4 years. Wish found his place in the scene as one of the founders of the Bass Affinity crew who used to hold regular nights at the Glasshouse. Wish has that solid Ambar party sound, which has seen him support many international DJs including Meat Katie, The Plump DJs, Lee Coombs, Aquasky and Rennie Pilgrem to name but a few.

Wish has also played overseas, playing in one of Nagoya’s (Japan) premier nightclubs, Club Daughter. Here Wish delivered his unique style to many who were left flabbergasted at his talent. Wish is part of the award winning Japan 4 crew and can be found at Ambar most weekends.

Marty McFly first hit the decks in 2001 while living in his hometown of Campbelltown, Sydney. He bought his first pair of turntables, developed his funk and broken beat edge on hip hop records (inspired from the masters themselves on DMC videos) and began to build a style he is known and loved for. Marty relocated to Perth in 2004 and burst onto the scene after winning the inaugural ‘Punters Choice’ competition for up-and-coming DJs at Ambar. His popularity pushed him in to a regular spot at Ambar, cementing his reputation. Marty is known in the scene as one of the cleanest cutters and scratchers around; just ask Jurassic 5 and Rahzel, who he played in-between on the Good Vibrations festival lineup.

Marty oozes the two big e’s; excellence and energy through every set he plays. Marty can also be seen most weekends as part of Japn4 and the Break-A-Holics Anonymous (BAA) crew; not to mention Boomtick’s Parklife, Breakfest and the innovative Tonight Only shows.

Flex has been DJing for almost 15 years, his marathon 8 hour sets at the infamous DCs nightclub in the early 90s are now legendary. Flex's trademark German electro sound and his ability to blend effortlessly between musical styles have forged his residency at Ambar. It’s also popped him in the top 10 for WA in the INTHEMIX Top 50 DJ Poll 2006. 2007 and 2008 saw Flex winning the Best Electro DJ award in the Perth Dance Music Awards, and coming in at #8 in WA in the INTHEMIX Top 50 DJ Poll. His love of house music and reputation as one of Perth’s best house DJs sees Flex’s success as the co-promoter behind Habitat and Habitat Electro parties at Ambar; delivering Kaskade, Inland Knights, Chris Lum, SWAG, Mark Dynamix, Sharem Jey, Trentemoller, Freeform Five and many, many more.

You can see Flex most weekends at Ambar as part of Habitat, plus Japn4 and the Break-A-Holics (BAA) crew. Flex is also consistently on Boomtick lineups; Breakfest, Parklife and Major Break.

Hitting the scene in 2001 after entering a mixtape in the Channel [V] DJ Competition and playing in the state finals and warming up for Judge Jules at Metropolis Nightclub, Philly became known around town as a hard hitter and a smooth mixer. Coming runner up in the national comp further cemeneted his DJing career. After playing around town Philly started up Hydrophonik: A blend of tech and electro sounds in breaks and house. This night is fuelled by nothing but bootlegs, mash-ups and white labels, and punters can be guaranteed a massively funky night out.

Nothing cheesy here, Philly is now one of Ambar’s Japan 4 residents and can be found most weekends at the Home of the Underground.

Mono Lisa was another product of the Punters Choice awards. Coming runner up by a mere 1 point in the 2005 edition, Mono Lisa thus launched her DJ career. 2006 saw her play at many gigs around town, getting a feel for her own style and what the peeps want. In the 2007 and 2008 PDMA’s Mono Lisa walked away with Best Female DJ, an award many would say was well deserved. Snapped up by Ambar, Mono Lisa has had the privilege of crackin’ onto the Japan 4 line up, playing alongside quality local and a selection of international DJs. Her unique sound has found her a niche in the Ambar family.

Beauty School Drop OutAfter dropping out of beauty school at just 19 due to an unfortunate bleaching incident, Dave went from mixing hair tints to developing his passion for music by mixing beats on his decks.

Thus Beauty School Dropout was born- A self taught DJ, BSDO terrorised his country town neighbours, before stirring crowds with a regular spot at the Blue Arrow in the state's Southwest. After moving to Perth, Dave met another enthusiastic reveler and the Nyquist Freqs were born.
