Villa's 3rd Birthday feat The Freestylers and Marten Horger

Easter Long Weekend
Thursday 5 April 2012

Villa
Doors open 10pm

In three years, Villa has brought you killer sold-out shows: the Stanton Warriors, Fake Blood, Krafty Kuts, Plump DJs, Kaskade, Steve Aoki, Kele Okereke, and so, SO many more!

Three stylin’ years as Perth’s best new venue means we needed to bring you the biggest act we could to celebrate; THE FREESTYLERS. One of the original Finger Lickin’ crew, The Freestylers are dancefloor sensations and they’re about to birthday-body-pop their Villa cherry.

Let’s just stop and think about the Freestylers for a moment. These sounds are a fast moving, electro-rocking monster movie that is going to hit your house like a tidal wave. Case-in-point: ‘Push Up’. They created it. Built it. Produced it. They MADE it. That tune is the definition of an anthem. And who do you think Pendulum has to thank for ‘Painkiller’ and ‘Fasten Your Seatbelts’? The Freestylers.

Over 15 years at the top. Acclaimed albums. Some of the best tunes in our scene. Oh yeah, the Freestylers have still got it. Whether they travel with a band, a vocalist, an MC or none of the above, you can bet on this: the nucleus of the ‘stylers has always been Matt Cantor and Aston Harvey – and they are the winning combination. With rafts of dancefloor weapons and a certified popchart hit in their ammo, expect to be absolutely slaughtered at our third birthday as Villa turns into a bass-laden broken beat battlefield.

Did someone say ‘Raw As F*ck’? Why yes. We did. Prepare yourselves for some ‘Adventures in Freestyle’. Don’t hold back.

If you’ve experienced a Freestylers set, it’s OK, we’ve got goosebumps too. If you haven’t…what are you waiting for?

MARTEN HØRGER
There is simply no better candidate to support the Freestylers than Marten Hørger. The German gent has more than just the funky letter in his name to earn your attention – he’s the beeps and bass hero of the Stanton Warriors, Plump DJs and Sir Krafty Kuts (we know, they told us).

Kickstarting his career in an underground venue in south Germany at the age of 15 (only in Germany, right?), Marten developed his own sound of breakbeat, electro, dubstep and hip hop. He calls it his ‘I don’t give a f*ck’ blend (otherwise referred to as ‘I play for the people’ blend. Seriously). The sound is extremely apparent in his 2006 duo Boogie Army, who gave us 2007’s biggest breakbeat anthem, ‘Sex, Drugs, Rock ‘n Roll’. He followed that up with SMASH HIFI, a project with Leeroy Thornhill (The Prodigy) and they popped out ‘Everything You Need’ and, most recently, ’15 Hundred Dollars/Take You Back’ – a tune already part of every breakbeat DJs set. But here’s what endears us the most to Marten Hørger – he runs Stamina Club, one of Europe’s longest running monthly breakbeat nights.

They just celebrated their 10th Anniversary…sound familiar?
