Boomtick pres. Freestylers (DJ Set) & Skool of Thought

Saturday 1 May 2010

Villa Nighctlub
Doors open at 10pm

Always one to go against the grain to give you what you want, Boomtick wants you to fasten your seatbelt for a night at Villa Nightclub featuring none other than The Freestylers and Skool of Thought.

The FreestylersThe Freestylers are ‘Raw as F**k’ breakbeat banditos who hooked up after a chance conversation exposed their joint love (some might say obsession) for music. The relationship was solidified with the birth of electro explosion, ‘Drop the Bomb’, - and so began the phenomenon that is The Freestylers.

Rocking clubs and parties for over a decade, Aston Harvey and Matt Cantor are still one of the most exciting names in dance music. They’ve had Top 20 chart hits, headlined big festivals, won numerous awards, sold half a million albums and were the first electronic act to play fully live on legendary BBC TV show Top Of The Pops.

Fasten Your Seatbelts y’all, The Freestylers are the dancefloor sensation of the nineties and the noughties – a fast-moving, electro-rocking monster that’ll hit your house like a tidal wave with tune after tune after tune. There’s Push Up, Painkiller (with Perth lads, Pendulum), Get A Life, Warning and a realm of filthiness from ‘Adventures in Freestyle’, ‘Raw As F**k’ and ‘A Different Story Vol. 1’. Get ready to be swept up with breakbeat’s party boys!

If you had to list the top 10 hottest DJ / producers in breakbeat, Skool Of Thought would standing on the podium with a medal around his neck. Founder of Supercharged and Against the Grain Records, and the more fledgling Cool & Deadly label, Skool Of Thought’s debut album ‘Random Acts Of Kindness’ was extremely well received, and it’s no wonder he was recently hailed as “the best international DJ this year” by promoters in New Zealand.

Skool of ThoughtFollowing a number of hugely successful albums such as ‘Random Acts Of Kindness’ and ‘Heavyweight Breaks’, Skool Of Thought returns to the wild to present a sound scape of unchartered territories where the wild beasts are basslines and the beats bite back.

Natural Selection’ has a killer instinct, from the stealth-like approach of Phaeleh’s ‘Selecta’ which creeps and pounces with precision, to the straight-for-the-juggler approach of Affinity’s remix of the Freestylers' ‘Slammer’. The album stands tall; proud in its breakbeat roots, safe in the knowledge that it’s scene remains strong, and comfortable enough for the selection to briefly explore the territories of grime and fidget with tracks like Stenchman’s ‘Computer Expert’ and Superstyle Deluxe’s ‘Kid Digital’. Breakbeat’s big dogs Krafty Kuts, Splitloop, Afghan Headspin, Si Begg, Michael Morph, Adsorb and Skool Of Thought himself also feature on Natural Selection, culminating itself as leader of the pack. The sound is raw and true, a departure from the cheap thrills of many passing trends, an endangered species, fierce without being tearing, and uncompromising whilst avoiding self-indulgence; it is indeed, a Natural Selection, a survival of the fittest.
