Sleazy. French. Dirty ass.

There’s only one instance these ingredients mix well – and that’s for a great night out with Maelstrom at Ambar Niteclub.

MaelstromIntroducing to Perth Joan Mael Peneau – aka Mr Strom, aka Maelstrom. As Mr Strom he showcases his funk, but it’s as Maelstrom he can shine in electro and breakbeat. The power of his party sound exploded amongst a French market flooded in nu-skool and tearout. Maelstrom managed to masterfully define his own place in the sound spectrum – a unique harmony heralded as the bridge between French electro and party breakbeat. A feat so wonderful he scored a nomination at the 2008 Breakspoll Awards for ‘Best Breakthrough Producer’.

The open format of Breakbeat allows Maelstrom to synthesize all of the styles and sounds of which he has previously produced, played and loved throughout his career. This, combined with the fact he had found himself at the forefront of a new scene in France, allowed him the liberty to be creative and adventurous with his work and inspired him to create what is now unique recognised as the Maelstrom sound: “Funky rhythms sampled from Soul and R&B music archives, layered with loud, phat basslines, a tough electro styled groove with a straight-up Breakbeat swagger.”

His bass is deliciously tweaked, twiddled and warped to within an inch of its life. Maelstrom’s sound is unashamedly French and freakin’ cool – described as bouncy, skippy 4/4, breaky, choppy, mashed-up – all with a catchy lead synth.

This night will leave you warm and dripping like wax from the walls of the Home of the Underground. Splattered with well-known samples from a class of super-cool dance history, this is ‘Real Street Shit’ alright.
