Villa Nightclub
Doors open at 9pm
Kick off your Easter weekend celebrating Villa’s first birthday!
A whole year since Perth’s newest venue opened its doors and we’re celebrating with the return of one of Boomtick’s favourite nights, Tonight Only! Episode 8 features Kissy Sell Out, HiJack and Solo.
Kissy Sell Out is your post-modern squeeze. Under the wing of Simian Mobile Disco, Headman, DJ Touché and the Loose Cannons; Kissy is our kinda guy. Take a few childhood memories of chasing the opposite sex at the local roller skating rink, mix it with a healthy Nirvana and Felix Da Housecat obsession and you’ve got one sweet sound. Melodically complex. 128 BPM. Youth.
The ‘In DJs We Trust’ radio show host took over a year to give birth to his debut album, Youth. Intensely personal with tracks about his family, first kiss and drinking shenanigans, you can expect he’ll wear his heart on his sleeve while standing behind the decks at Villa.
Mixmag called Kissy Sell Out, “One of the most exciting, charismatic and entertaining DJs of the decade”. No doubt.
And if you’re looking to bounce on funk-fuelled grooves with chunky beats and quirky hooks, HiJack’s your answer. An established name in the UK’s underground house scene, his sound fuses jacking house and techno, with samples from all musical eras and genres.
It’s James Brown meets N.E.R.D. – nice, huh?
His debut EP was signed to the respected UK label On The Brink Recordings, delivering him immediate props. Two more original EPs have followed before the hugely successful ‘Jackpot EP’ (released on US label Potty Mouth Music). HiJack’s sets are full of unreleased surprises which will shanghai your senses – a perfect accomplice to a night of smooth criminals.
Rounding out this tremendous trio is Italian DJ stallion, Solo. Stefano Ritteri (a.k.a Solo) grew up in studios, rehearsal rooms and gigs since the age of 14, playing drums and guitar in bands and experimenting with turntables and FX at school concerts. He held residencies at the coolest clubs in Italy before moving his studio to London and started working behind the scenes, co-producing and mixing for Mowgli for Elite Forces's label Used&Abused. Their version of ‘No turning back’ became a massive underground hit. After this other releases soon followed, including remixes for Xpress2 and Cornershop, as well his first EP, amusingly named ‘We are the Midgets’, a sign of his new sound (playfully referred to as ‘midget house’ = crazy samples, mad use of percussion and chopped melodies, vocals and synth lines). Solo is now in high demand for remixes and collaborations with upcoming releases on labels including Defected, Ninja Tune, Mute, Exploited records and many more.
